Studio work continues with the wonderful support of a 2024 Visual Arts Bursary. Deepening into researching ideas of connection, interconnection, care and reciprocity, the values needed for our time I believe. Much research and experimentation with natural and sustainable materials is underway.

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ENCAUSTIC PAINTING
The studio, Bray, Co. Wicklow, 9.30am- .30pm, 22- 23 March, €240, all materials included.
This workshop is suitable for those new to the medium or those looking to refresh. We’ll cover a wide range of technical and intuitive processes involved with encaustic paint: surface preparation; indepth additive and subtractive techniques; compatible drawing media; photographic transfer; collage and embedding small objects.
There will be a focus on creating history, optical depth and visual complexity through a combination of mark making, layering, scraping and the use of translucency and opacity. Demos and plenty of painting time with one to one support to develop your particular interests. Creative exercises and experimentation will expand your approach to working with the paint. Design and colour theory fundamentals will be reviewed throughout. Equipment and health & safety will also be reviewed. All materials (R&F paint and pigment sticks), equipment, tools are included and we share a communal pot luck lunch.

SCALE, TRANSLUCENCY, LAYERS AND HISTORY
The studio, Bray, Co. Wicklow, 9.30am- 4.30pm, 25-26 March, €240, all materials included.
This workshop will build existing skills, expand visual vocabulary and challenge you to work larger. Emphasis will be placed on creating optical depth and visual complexity through the use of translucency/opacity; mark making; layering and scraping. As well as creating a smooth surface, working with precision and navigating the technical and compositional challenges of working larger.
We will begin with a refresh of surface preparation; additive and subtractive techniques; fusing techniques and studio safety considerations. There will be demos, plenty of open painting time and a focus on one to one support to develop each person’s particular interests. Students are met at whatever skill level they are at and challenged to push and hone skills. Exercises and experimentation will help to access the ‘open mode’- playfulness, chance and improvisation. Design and colour theory fundamentals will be reviewed throughout. Equipment and health & safety will also be covered.
All materials (R&F paint and pigment sticks), equipment, tools are included and we share a communal pot luck lunch.
